The Attractions
Sam Lawson runs a 'black museum'
in a seaside town. There are some very strange exhibits on display,
including a lot of nasty-looking murder weapons. But business is
bad — until young Danny breezes in with some fresh ideas about
what the public wants. (Cast 2m, 1f)
"Marchant,
whose writing has lost none of its verve and authenticity, and whose
creation of character remains consummate, sets up a situation that
chillingly explores the darker aspects of human thoughts and behaviour"
~
Lyn
Gardner, City Limits
“The
greatest pleasure is Marchant’s heightened, even Baroque use
of the vernacular, and his way with humour ... he is an instinctive
dramatist.”
~ Giles
Gordon, London Daily News
“[a]
sharp-witted and wise psychological mystery...”
~ Eric
Shorter, The Daily Telegraph
“...there
is great pleasure to be found in Marchant’s chamber of horrors
... his writing is Stanley-blade acute..."
~ Alex
Renton, The Independent

Speculators
It
is 7.15 a.m. in the foreign exchange dealing room of a bank in the
City of London and the young whizz-kids are all geared up for a
day's work making money out of money. Deutschmarks, dollars, yen
— the bandwagon is rolling and the adrenalin is flowing faster
than the champagne. The question is — can these speculators
stand the pace? (Cast 10m, 4f)
“Speculators
marks this young dramatist’s continued, gleaming progress
from the back streets into grander public concerns.”
~ Jim
Hiley, The Listener
“...the
play scores high points on tautly written, febrile authenticity,
and a strong cast confidently handle the jokey banter soured by
the musk of fear rising from amidst the hardware.”
~ Robert
Gore-Langton, Time Out
"...Speculators is a horrifyingly entertaining attack
on those who have substituted 'Greed' for 'Cheese' in the group
photo and have forever changed the traditional city rules in their
ruthless pursuit of the fast buck."
~
Lyn Gardner, City Limits
"...a punchy, aggressive play..."
~
Michael Billington, The Guardian
