William
Sutcliffe
New Boy
adapted for the stage by Russell Labey
Barry
has the face of an angel, the body of a god - and the name of a
plasterer. When he arrives as the new boy at school everyone’s
hormones start racing ... and it’s not just the girls who
fancy him. New Boy premiered in Edinburgh in 2000 and ran
for six weeks at the Pleasance Theatre, London the following year.
It opened off Broadway in October 2002. (Cast 3m, 2f)
“Russell
Labey’s play cleverly reworks William Sutcliffe’s enormously
popular novel, and his stage adaptation makes a thoroughly enjoyable
evening.”
~ Roger Foss, What’s

“Smart,
entertaining stuff ... somewhere between Adrian Mole and Holden
Caulfield”
~ The Mail on Sunday
“Adolescent
desire, burgeoning sexuality, loss of virginity and cross-generational
sex, all deftly handled in a cracking script”
~ The Guardian
“Compelling,
fast, funny, scintillating...”
~ 5 Stars Critics’
Choice, The Scotsman
“...the
play's ultimate message – that we shouldn't let sex and sexuality
become such a big deal – is communicated more effectively
than in most 'ishoo-based' pieces simply by being raised so unfussily.”
~ Ian Shuttleworth, Financial Times
